A little about me...

My name’s Benjamin McCormick and, believe it or not, I was once eating a diet consisting of 75% meat! I was as heavy a carnivore as they come. I thought vegans were an extreme group of people who were too skinny to be healthy. Yet I kept an open mind and learnt more about the benefits of going vegan, saw through the cultural stereotypes and became even more intrigued.

The more I learned about it, the more I thought it utterly insane not act on this information.
When I first started transitioning away from a heavy carnivorous diet, I was doing it for the animals. I was exposed to how unnecessarily cruel the entire meat and dairy industries are, and I made a conscious decision to no longer be a part of it. I was being vegan for the animals whose rights are so cruelly taken away from them. As I continued my research I discovered there are so many more, equally as viable, reasons to go vegan.

Now I am vegan out of respect for all the life forms on this planet, out of respect for my body, and out of respect for the earth we all share.

I believe it is our duty as human beings to make as much practical use of this gift of life we have been given. The decision of what to eat each day has a huge impact; on our own bodies and also on the lives of other living beings. It also carries with it the capacity to hurt something far more vital than any one living thing… it can damage the very life form itself that we all depend on… our planet.

Giving up a habit that you’ve been doing at least 3 times a day for your entire life is hard at the outset, there’s no doubt about it. Especially as man, in our culture there is an association of masculinity with consuming meat, so getting over that was a big step. It can feel like, by giving up meat, you’re giving up a piece of your identity, which is understandably hard for anyone.

When at first I had a lot of difficulty, I decided to turn to study the methods of those who have succeeded before me. I modelled these successful behaviours and my life just got a whole lot easier! The actions I took are explained thoroughly in the book, with a key focus on LEARNING AS MUCH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN about; the health benefits of vegan nutrition; animal rights and the necessary abuse in factory farms; and the effect animal agriculture has on our environment.

Learning about all of these important topics allows our cultural conditioning to be replaced with a more fair and honest set of principles – based on scientific research - while the practice of eating plants allows you to experience a whole load of wonderful health benefits at the same time.
